Summary

All apps I use on a daily basis remember the main window size they had before closing, and reopen with that size, but not Zed.

Description

A majority of apps out there, and especially text editors, remember the window size they had before they were last closed. When you reopen the app, it uses that size.

Zed has its own opinions on that topic. Every time I open Zed, the main window is in this weird state where it takes over the whole screen but it's not quite maximized. I could maximize it, but that does not change the size - it's fake maximization.

But that is not how I use this app. I always keep the app at around 25% of the surface area of the screen. That works really well. But no, Zed believes it knows better, and overrides my choice every time.

That's not even the worst part. The worst part is, Zed is incredibly hard to resize. The width of the area that I could grab with the mouse to gingerly resize the window from one side is literally just one pixel. Makes you wanna throw the monitor out the window.

This does not happen just on Windows. This is just where the behavior is most evident. Zed makes some kind of bad decisions when it reopens, with regards to window size, on every platform. That part of code needs to be rethought.

This is not the older issue where Zed opened in such a way that the window could not be moved. That has been fixed. But the fix is pretty bad.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Install Zed on Windows 11.
  2. Make sure the screen is configured at 1920x1080 with a scale factor of 125%.
  3. Resize Zed such that its surface area is about 25% of the screen.
  4. Close Zed.
  5. Open Zed again.

Expected Behavior:

Zed should open with the last used window size and position. Only when those cannot happen again (different screen plugged in) then some default should apply. But the default should be reasonable. Do not fake-maximize it every single time, that makes no sense.

And increase the width of the area where I can grab it with the mouse to resize. The current setting is super-frustrating, especially on top of the current behavior.

Actual Behavior:

It opens in a fake-maximized state every time, and it's super-hard to resize.
