#338923·VS Code

VS Code Stopped Rendering Mermaid Blocks in Jupyter Notebook (VS Code `1.140.0`)

Author: RoyiAvitalCreated Sep 30, 2026Updated Oct 2, 2026

Does this issue occur when all extensions are disabled?: Yes (Only the Python and Jupyter Extensions).

VS Code: 1.140.0 Commit: 07f806f999227108933c2e30515b26eecc1fda74 OS: Windows x64 (Windows 11 25H2)

Steps:

  1. Open a Jupyter notebook in VS Code.
  2. Add a Markdown cell containing the minimal diagram below.
  3. Render the cell.

Expected: A Mermaid diagram renders.

Actual: No diagram renders. The notebook webview console reports:

TypeError: Ge.default.extend is not a function at chunk-35AFGY2R.js:67:104

The chunk belongs to the built-in extension: vscode.mermaid-markdown-features/notebook-out

In the notebook's active-frame console: typeof define -> "function" typeof define.amd -> "object"

Suspected cause: The bundled fastdom dependency checks for a global define function and takes its AMD branch instead of assigning its CommonJS export. Mermaid then calls .extend() on the wrong export during initialization.
