VS Code symbol auto-complete is disabled by Copilot Ghost text suggestions

Steps needed to reliably reproduce the problem

1. Enable Copilot / Inline Suggestions / Ghost text suggestions.
2. Focus on an editor window labelled with a language for which Copilot Suggestions are enabled.
3. Type text in an area for which VS Code provides auto-completion of symbols and snippets (e.g., not in a comment block).
4. Whether or not Copilot in fact produces a Ghost text suggestion, VS Code will not display auto-complete options.

An exception that is probably not an exception

1. Enable Copilot / Inline Suggestions / Ghost text suggestions.
2. Enable Copilot Suggestions for Python language.
3. Enable ms-python.python Python language server.
4. Alternatively, enable charliermarsh.ruff Python language server.
5. Focus on an editor window labelled as Python language.
6. Type "import" in an area the language server will interpret "import" as the Python keyword "import".
7. Alternatively, type "from" in an area the language server will interpret "from" as the Python keyword "from" that will be coupled with the Python keyword "import" (i.e. ast.ImportFrom).
8. Type the identifier (i.e. ast.Name) of a package for which the language server has an index of symbols, followed by ".".
9. Alternatively, type "." if the namespace of the focused window resolves to a package for which the language server has an index of symbols.
10. The language server(s) will display auto-complete options: limited to the language server's knowledge of the namespace and the subset of attributes of the namespace the language server is configured to display (the language server might only display, for example, attributes defined in a .pyi file).

Troubleshooting details

In addition to troubleshooting implied by the above description:

• Onset: 2-3 months ago.
• Consistent, not intermittent, since onset.
• Did not occur before onset.
• No change of any kind is known to be associated with the onset.
• No other problems are known to be associated with the onset.
• No other problems are known to be mitigated by disabling Ghost text suggestions.
• OS, VS Code, and extensions are up to date and have been updated regularly since onset.
• Searched for, but did not find, VS Code settings related to the problem.
