Support embedded environments

Sonic is designed to be lightweight. One goal we have in mind it to allow it to be used in embedded environments.

#313 was an effort to make this a reality, but the original author seems unresponsive (it’s been a while, that’s on us) and Sonic’s structure has moved quite a bit (and will continue to do so).

I mention it here for discoverability, and will now proceed closing the PR in favor of this issue (used for tracking).
