macOS client keeps getting silently terminated

What is the issue?

The Tailscale client (version 1.92.3, Mac App Store variant) on my machine (MacBook M3 Pro, running macOS 26.2) keeps silently terminating. The icon disappears from the menu bar and connections are killed.

Looking at messages in the macOS Console, I see this suspicious message:

Acquiring assertion targeting system from originator [osservice<com.apple.cache_delete(502)>:57724] with description <RBSAssertionDescriptor| "CacheDeleteAppContainerCaches requesting termination assertion for io.tailscale.ipn.macos" ID:417-57724-50747 target:system attributes:[

)}>> allow:(null)>

Google Gemini actually came to the rescue here and suggests the root cause:

CacheDeleteAppContainerCaches requesting termination means macOS is aggressively clearing app caches to free up disk space, often during low disk conditions, causing background apps (especially status bar apps) to be silently terminated by the system RunningBoard to reclaim memory/storage. While Apple's CacheDelete system aims to manage this, developers of persistent apps need strategies like using NSProcessInfo assertions or specific entitlements, though there's no perfect fix, as the OS prioritizes system health.

I do in fact have very little disk space remaining (1.2 GB out of 926 GB), and I should fix that. However, no other applications are being terminated, making me think that Tailscale isn't properly requesting it to stay persistent.

Gemini says:

Implement NSProcessInfo assertions (like beginActivity(options:reason:) to signal to the system your app needs to stay running, though this isn't foolproof against extreme disk pressure.

I'm not a macOS developer, but this sounds reasonable. It looks like the other alternative is to make it a "launch agent?"

I'm not sure if it matters if it's the Mac App Store version or not, but as mentioned before, I'm using the App Store version.
