Icon name

alphabet-chinese (suggested tags: chinese, hanzi, han, cjk, mandarin, cantonese, script, writing system)

Use cases

1. Font library app for type designers: each font style has a "Writing systems" panel listing the scripts the font supports, one row per script with an icon, the script name, the glyph coverage percentage and the number of supported languages. Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Arabic, Hebrew, Thai and Korean rows use the existing alphabet-* icons. Chinese (Simplified and Traditional) has to fall back to the generic language icon, which breaks the visual consistency of the list.
2. Filtering languages by writing system: a dropdown filters the supported languages of a font by script, with the script icon next to each option. The same icon is needed for Chinese there.
3. Locale switchers and i18n settings: marking the Chinese locale in a language picker, and tagging font families by supported script in type foundry catalogs.

Design ideas

A single character, like the other single-glyph alphabet icons (alphabet-korean uses 가, alphabet-thai uses ก, alphabet-hebrew uses א).

Suggested character: 中 (as in 中文, "Chinese language"):

• it is identical in Simplified and Traditional Chinese, so one icon covers both;
• its structure (a box crossed by a vertical stroke) is very clean at 24px with a 2px stroke;
• it avoids overlapping with the existing language icon, which already uses a CJK character (see #416 about 文 being hard to render at icon size).

Alternative: 字 ("character"), but it is more detailed and less legible at small sizes.
