Updating to v6.17 fails

When I now open Spyder 6.14, I get a popup stating that a version 6.17 is available. Whether I select (update) "After closing" or "Yes" to update immediately, the update never happens. With the immediate update option, the IDE closes but I still have v6.14 when I restart Spyder.
Running Spyder from a terminal and attempting to update (immediately), I get a seg fault error in the terminal.
The updater updated briefly before this problem appeared. Not sure if this is related, but updating has always worked in the past. Something seems to have changed recently.
