Connecting from Ubuntu to Raspberry Pi using USB to TTL, following linked guide just results in black bash windows on Ubuntu.

When I try to connect to the Pi using the USB to ttyl connection, I keep encountering this error where the bash screen shows nothing and locks up. To try to set up this connection I followed this guide.
