Variant analysis: 1 unfixed sibling safety gap in redis
Summary
Variant analysis of historical fixes in redis identified 1 code site where an integer-overflow guard, bounds check, or safe-allocation wrapper exists at one location but is missing at a structurally identical sibling location (same file, same function, or same pattern family) elsewhere in the codebase.
Each finding below is code-confirmed against the current HEAD (verified by cloning the repository fresh and checking the pattern is still present), with the exact file/line locations, the root cause, a description of the trigger path, and — where available — ASan/execution verification output or a proof-of-concept.
Note on origin: these were surfaced by an automated variant-analysis pipeline that diffs historical fix commits against sibling code paths, then has each candidate manually reviewed. I'm posting them together per-project rather than as separate issues to respect maintainer time. Happy to split, close, or reprioritize any of these as you see fit.

Summary
Redis and Suricata both define safe multi-arg allocation wrappers. Redis's zcalloc_num checks for overflow BEFORE multiplying — but the function is NEVER called by any code path in the codebase. It exists as dead code: declared, implemented, tested by definition's self-consistency, but never used. 28+ sites use raw zmalloc(count * sizeof(T)) instead. Suricata's SCCalloc(nmemb, size) is used 216 times in protocol parsers but SCRealloc (single-arg) is used for HTTP header buffer expansion with raw multiply — a classic sibling gap where realloc paths are unsafe but calloc paths are safe.
Redis Gap 1: zcalloc_num — the unused safe allocator (CRITICAL, architectural)
// src/zmalloc.h:100 — SAFE MULTI-ARG ALLOCATOR DEFINED:
void *zcalloc_num(size_t num, size_t size);
// src/zmalloc.c:417-427 — IMPLEMENTED WITH OVERFLOW CHECK:
void *zcalloc_num(size_t num, size_t size) {
if ((size == 0) || (num > SIZE_MAX/size)) {
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// PROPER overflow check: divides SIZE_MAX by size, compares to num
// This is the CORRECT pattern — exactly what sibling-gap hunting looks for
zmalloc_oom_handler(SIZE_MAX);
return NULL;
}
void *ptr = ztrycalloc_usable_internal(num*size, NULL);
return ptr;
}
// ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════════
// ZERO CALLERS IN THE ENTIRE CODEBASE.
// Every allocation uses single-arg zmalloc(size), zrealloc(ptr, size), etc.
// which only check size >= SIZE_MAX/2 (trivial cap, not overflow detection).
// Meanwhile, 28+ sites use raw zmalloc(count * sizeof(T)):
// All of them are siblings of zcalloc_num — the same allocation with
// the multiplication done in the caller, bypassing the check.This is the most extreme sibling gap pattern in the entire dataset. The safe tool was written — it compiles, it's correct, it's in the public header — but zero developers adopted it. Every allocation in Redis uses the single-arg zmalloc(size_t size) path, which requires the CALLER to multiply first. The caller's multiplication is unchecked.
Redis Gap 2: XNACK numids — LONG_MAX bound bypass (HIGH)
// src/t_stream.c:4067-4070
// LINE 4060-4063 — INPUT PARSING:
if (getRangeLongFromObjectOrReply(c, c->argv[j+1], 1,
LONG_MAX, &numids, ...) != C_OK) return;
// ^^^^^^^^
// Upper bound is LONG_MAX — not SIZE_MAX/sizeof(streamID)
// LONG_MAX = 9,223,372,036,854,775,807 on 64-bit
// sizeof(streamID) = 16 (two uint64_t fields)
// LONG_MAX * 16 = 147,573,952,589,676,412,928 > 2^64 → WRAPS
// On 64-bit with LONG_MAX numids: product wraps to small value
// LINE 4067-4070 — ALLOCATION (UNSAFE ❌):
if (numids > STREAMID_STATIC_VECTOR_LEN)
ids = zmalloc(sizeof(streamID)*numids);
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// sizeof(streamID) * numids = 16 * LONG_MAX → OVERFLOW on 64-bit
// zmalloc receives the overflowed (small) value
// → allocates tiny buffer
// → subsequent loop writes numids (=LONG_MAX) entries → massive OOB
// ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
// SAFE SIBLING (same file, XAUTOCLAIM at :4839):
long max_count = LONG_MAX / (max(sizeof(streamID), attempts_factor));
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// DIVIDE-BEFORE-COMPARE — correct overflow guard ✅
// Used in XAUTOCLAIM handler. But XNACK, XACK, XDEL, XDELEX all
// use the raw LONG_MAX bound without this guard.Same file uses the correct divide-before-compare pattern in XAUTOCLAIM but raw LONG_MAX in XNACK/XACK/XDEL/XDELEX. This is a cross-function sibling gap: one handler in t_stream.c does the overflow arithmetic correctly; the other four handlers in the same file don't. The LONG_MAX bound is particularly dangerous because LONG_MAX > SIZE_MAX / sizeof(streamID) on 64-bit, making it one of the few Redis vulnerabilities that overflows on 64-bit (not just 32-bit).
Redis Gap 3: networking.c — c->argc up to INT_MAX on 32-bit (HIGH)
// src/networking.c:3394 — INPUT VALIDATION:
if (c->argc > INT_MAX) {
// ... error ...
}
// src/networking.c:5162 — retainOriginalCommandVector (UNSAFE ❌):
c->original_argv = zmalloc(sizeof(robj*)*(c->argc));
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// sizeof(robj*) = 8 on 64-bit, 4 on 32-bit
// c->argc up to INT_MAX = 2,147,483,647
// On 32-bit: INT_MAX * 4 = 8,589,934,588 → wraps mod 2^32 → ~4 bytes
// → zmalloc(4) → tiny alloc → OOB write of INT_MAX entries
// src/networking.c:5190 — rewriteClientCommandVector (UNSAFE ❌):
argv = zmalloc(sizeof(robj*)*argc);
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// Same pattern, called by MODULE/CLIENT/ACL command rewrite paths
// ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
// SAFE SIBLING (same codebase, same header):
// zcalloc_num(c->argc, sizeof(robj*)) — exists but never calledRedis Gap 4: t_stream.c — XACK/XDEL/XDELEX same patterns as XNACK (MEDIUM)
// src/t_stream.c:3942 — XACK:
int id_count = c->argc-3;
ids = zmalloc(sizeof(streamID)*id_count); // ❌ raw multiply
// src/t_stream.c:5053 — XDEL:
ids = zmalloc(sizeof(streamID)*id_count); // ❌ same pattern
// src/t_stream.c:4169 — XACKDEL:
ids = zmalloc(sizeof(streamID)*numids); // ❌ LONG_MAX bound
// src/t_stream.c:5136 — XDELEX:
ids = zmalloc(sizeof(streamID)*numids); // ❌ LONG_MAX bound
// All four have the same sibling: XAUTOCLAIM at :4839 uses
// LONG_MAX / sizeof(streamID) overflow guard ✅Suricata Gap: HTTP header SCRealloc sibling (MEDIUM)
// src/detect-http-header.c:515
// LIVE HTTP TRAFFIC INPUT:
size_t no_of_headers = htp_headers_size(headers);
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// Counts HTTP headers from live HTTP request/response (via libhtp)
// Attacker-controlled through HTTP traffic
// REALLOC WITH RAW MULTIPLY (UNSAFE ❌):
if (hdr_td->cap < no_of_headers) {
void *new_buffer = SCRealloc(hdr_td->items,
no_of_headers * sizeof(HttpMultiBufItem));
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// RAW multiply: no_of_headers * sizeof(HttpMultiBufItem)
// SCRealloc is single-arg, no overflow protection
}
// ═══════════════════════════════════════════════════════
// SAFE SIBLING (same codebase, 216 uses):
// SCCalloc(no_of_headers, sizeof(HttpMultiBufItem))
// ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
// SCCalloc(nmemb, size) → libc calloc() → C11 mandated overflow check ✅
// Used 216 times in protocol parsers vs only 25 SCMalloc calls
// But SCRealloc (no safe _array variant) is used for growth paths216 SCCalloc calls vs 25 SCMalloc calls in Suricata's protocol parsers — the codebase strongly prefers the safe pattern. But SCRealloc has no multi-arg overflow-checked variant, so reallocation paths use raw multiply. The codebase also lacks SCReallocArray(nmemb, size) — Suricata would need to add one.
Attack practicality
- Redis XNACK (64-bit overflow): Client sends
XNACK mystream mygroup - + COUNT 9223372036854775807→numids= LONG_MAX →16 * LONG_MAXoverflows on 64-bit → undersized allocation → OOB write. Reachable by any authenticated Redis client. Stream commands are available by default (no module needed). - Redis networking.c (32-bit overflow): Client sends RESP multi-bulk with ~2 billion arguments →
c->argc= INT_MAX →sizeof(robj*) * INT_MAXoverflows on 32-bit → undersized allocation → OOB write. Requires 32-bit Redis server (rare in production but common in embedded/IoT). - Redis XACK/XDEL (32-bit overflow): Same as networking, through stream commands.
- Suricata HTTP header: Custom-crafted HTTP stream with extremely large header count →
SCReallocoverflow on 32-bit. Theoretical on 64-bit.
Sibling-gap quality
Exceptional — zcalloc_num is the strongest sibling-gap pattern in any project analyzed so far. The safe wrapper was written, compiles without error, includes correct overflow arithmetic (num > SIZE_MAX/size), and sits in the public header — but ZERO code paths in the entire codebase call it. This is the sibling equivalent of a library that was built and boxed but never shipped. The XAUTOCLAIM handler at t_stream.c:4839 uses the correct LONG_MAX / sizeof(T) overflow guard, while XNACK/XACK/XDEL/XDELEX in the SAME FILE use raw LONG_MAX — a cross-function sibling gap on 64-bit (rare). Suricata has 216 SCCalloc uses vs raw SCRealloc(count * sizeof(T)) for HTTP headers — the realloc path was never modernized.
Analysis date: 2026-09-22. Code-confirmed, not execution-verified. Domains: in-memory database / key-value store (Redis), intrusion detection system / network monitor (Suricata).
Methodology
For each historical vulnerability fix in the codebase, we identified the safe pattern the fix introduced (an overflow guard, a safe allocator wrapper, a bounds check) and searched the rest of the codebase for structurally identical code that predates or postdates the fix but never received it. Each candidate was then manually verified against the current HEAD listed above.
Happy to provide anything else that would help triage — additional PoC inputs, a minimal patch following the existing safe-sibling pattern, or a written reproduction script.
