Request to restore pygame.movie module or provide an official video playback solution

Author: 18348552732Created Aug 7, 2026Updated Aug 7, 2026

The  pygame.movie  module was completely removed in pygame 2.0 and later versions. For many beginners and small game developers, this is quite regrettable.

Why we need video playback back:

1. Low barrier to entry: Previously, you could play a video with just a few lines of code using  pygame.movie.Movie() , which was very beginner-friendly. Now you have to integrate moviepy or opencv yourself, which is too complicated for newcomers. 2. Essential for game development: Many small games need opening animations, cutscenes, story videos, dynamic backgrounds, etc. As an entry-level game engine, pygame really should have built-in video playback support. 3. Broken tutorial ecosystem: A huge amount of old tutorials online still use  pygame.movie . Beginners follow these tutorials and immediately hit errors — it's a bad experience and easily discourages new users. 4. Alternatives are not great:

  • moviepy is too heavy, with lots of dependencies and installation headaches
  • opencv makes audio-video sync really tricky
  • Third-party libraries vary in quality, no official guarantee

Suggestions:

1. It would be best if  pygame.movie  could be restored directly, even if it only supports common MP4 format. 2. If it can't be restored for technical reasons, we hope the official team can provide an officially recommended, simple-to-use video playback solution, or at least clear best practices in the documentation.

Thanks to the pygame team for all your hard work! Hope you'll consider this suggestion!
