Summary
I scanned every link in README.md and found 89 entries whose listed URL returns a hard 404/410, confirmed over two independent passes.
This is offered as a cleanup checklist, not a PR, since deciding between remove vs update the URL is a maintainer call for most of these. Happy to submit a PR for whichever subset you prefer.
Related: #6918 covers dead COVID-era entries in the Health section specifically; this is a repo-wide pass.
Method
- Parsed all 1706 entries (1704 unique URLs) out of the README tables.
GET with browser User-Agent, following redirects, 25s read timeout.- Everything that failed the first pass was re-checked a second time; 26 URLs recovered and were dropped from the list as transient.
- Response bodies were spot-checked to confirm the 404s come from the origin servers (GitHub Pages, nginx, Cloudflare) rather than from an intermediary.
What this list deliberately excludes
To keep the signal clean, I excluded everything I could not attribute with confidence:
- 403 / 429 responses — almost always bot filtering, the sites are fine in a browser.
- 5xx and timeouts — could be transient.
- TLS handshake failures — my scanning host is behind a proxy and produced an identical
SSLEOFError for every one of them, which is a network-path signature rather than 84 sites independently breaking their certificates. These need verification from a clean network before anyone acts on them.
So 89 is a deliberately conservative floor, not the total number of broken entries.

Notes
- Some of these are likely moved rather than gone (e.g. docs reorganised under a new path), so a blanket removal would lose entries that are still usable. Worth a look before deleting.
- The daily
validate_links.yml workflow checks that links resolve, but its failures do not appear to be triaged back into the README, which is probably why these accumulated.
