What are you trying to do? What is your use case?

I use Outline VPN as a lightweight and reliable VPN client. However, I also need more control over how traffic is routed and how applications connect to the VPN. These are common use cases that many users rely on in other VPN clients.

Yes.

Outline has remained almost unchanged for years while many competing VPN clients have introduced features that significantly improve usability and flexibility.

Some of the missing features that affect daily use are:

No Split Tunneling (route only selected apps through the VPN). No built-in local SOCKS5/HTTP proxy that applications can use directly. No option to disable automatic updates. Very limited advanced configuration options.

These limitations force users to either switch to another VPN client or rely on external tools and workarounds.

Describe the solution you'd like.

I would like Outline to support the following features:

Split Tunneling (per-app or per-process routing). Built-in local SOCKS5 and/or HTTP proxy so applications can connect to Outline without tunneling the entire system. An option to disable automatic updates, allowing users to choose when to update. More advanced client settings for power users while keeping the default interface simple.

These features are widely available in many modern VPN clients and would greatly improve Outline's usability.

Describe alternatives you've considered

Currently, the only alternatives are:

Switching to another VPN client that already supports these features. Using third-party proxy software or routing tools as workarounds. Blocking updates through firewall rules or the operating system, which is inconvenient and unreliable.

I believe Outline is a great project with a clean design, but its feature set has remained largely stagnant for years. Adding these capabilities would make it much more practical for both everyday users and power users.
