Invalid characters in atom when adding account with special chars in username

Running Windows 10, Nylas N1 0.4.45.

I'm trying to add an account with a username like audun(ughf)@example.com.

When pressing "Connect account" I get:

IMAP Error when connecting to 'examlpe.com': 'LOGIN command error: BAD ['Invalid characters in atom']'. Please check your IMAP settings.

If I remove ( and ) from the username I get "Incorrect credentials" so it seems like ( or ) breaks the login.
