Please Consider to Add "ALTCHA" Captcha Support!

Author: desuduhckCreated Sep 25, 2026Updated Sep 27, 2026

Pitch

"ALTCHA is a privacy-friendly, open-source, and self-hostable CAPTCHA solution developed in Europe. I would like to see ALTCHA supported as an alternative CAPTCHA provider for Mastodon.

ALTCHA fits well with Mastodon's focus on decentralization, privacy, and user control. Unlike centralized third-party CAPTCHA services such as hCaptcha, ALTCHA can be self-hosted, giving Mastodon instance administrators more control over their infrastructure and data.

ALTCHA is also lightweight and fast. It uses a proof-of-work approach rather than requiring users to solve visual puzzles, which can provide a smoother and more accessible user experience."

Thank you and i hope you considering this!

Motivation

This would benefit Mastodon instance administrators and users across the Fediverse by providing another option for protecting instances against automated abuse and bot registrations.

The main benefits would be:

Privacy: ALTCHA can be self-hosted without relying on a centralized external CAPTCHA provider. Self-hosting: Instance administrators can run the service themselves and retain control over their infrastructure and data.

Open source: ALTCHA is open-source!

Performance: ALTCHA is very lightweight and fast.

Users do not have to solve traditional annoying visual CAPTCHA puzzles. Alignment with Mastodon: A self-hostable CAPTCHA option fits well with Mastodon's decentralized and privacy-oriented ecosystem.

Having ALTCHA as an additional CAPTCHA option would give Mastodon administrators more freedom to choose how they implement bot protection on their own instances.
