Non-ASCII characters saved in text become u2019 / u00f1 text after an editor save

Description
After a normal editor save, text such as "it’s" and "Español" appears as "itu2019s" and "Espau00f1ol": the backslash of the \\uXXXX escape is lost. It repeated after each save that followed a fix.
Steps to reproduce
In an e-paragraph widget, type text with an apostrophe or an accented character. Click Update. Reload the page and check the text on the front end and in the stored data.
Expected behavior
The characters are saved and shown correctly.
