Inconsistent use of ellipses when truncating lists during a search

From what I understand (I could not find anything documented), ellipses are supposed to be shown after a directory name when its entries under it are completely truncated.

However, when starting a search this symbol sometimes appears on directories with listing under them. This is usually easy enough to reproduce on a search with many results in many subdirectories.

This is related to #1213 as a potential different use of this symbol that I think would make more sense.
