I lose all Internet with app paused or not paused.

I am sure this is a rookie question. I used to have this app on my phone and it worked great. I had to update to a newer version of adaway and now it kills my internet capabilities. I use the VPN version and I lose my internet with the app paused. I can not even have the app installed and have internet. What settings am I overlooking?
