The most space-efficient sheet layout is not always the easiest one to cut.

The right method depends on the machine, material, and value of workshop simplicity.

Guillotine cutting A guillotine plan divides stock using complete straight cuts from one edge to the other.

This is often practical for panel saws, track saws, and table-saw workflows built around strips.

Choose it when: every operation must be a full straight cut; handling large sheets is the main constraint; a clear cut sequence is more important than squeezing out the last percentage of material.

Free nesting Free nesting can arrange rectangles more flexibly.

It may reduce waste, but some placements can require extra handling or cuts that are awkward on a particular machine.

Choose it when: the equipment can reach each cut safely; material cost is high enough to justify added complexity; the operator can plan a safe sequence from the diagram.
